Through the Medcoral Pioneer Program, promoted by the man and territory association (Hut) More than 6.000 orange coral colonies, all of them with a survival of 100%

The Mediterranean Marine Group, Concessionaire of the Marina del Este, has hosted the presentation of the results of a pioneer project in Europe: The creation of the first two orange coral reefs (Astroides calycularis) On the coast of the natural place of the cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo. The initiative has been promoted by the Man and Territory Association (Hut) Through its medcoral program, With the support of Imagin and CaixaBank.
With this act, Mediterranean marinas reinforces its commitment to the protection of the marine environment and the sustainability of its ports, giving support to projects that generate a direct positive impact on biodiversity in general and in its area of influence, in particular.
A pioneer project in Europe
The orange coral, Endemic species of the Mediterranean and currently threatened, has suffered a strong setback in recent decades. The reef generated by Medcoral show very positive results: More than 6.100 Colonies, all with a survival of 100%. During the campaigns of 2023 y 2024 More than 4.000 coral larvae, With a 17% successful in fixation, What has given rise to new colonies.
Biodiversity in the area has increased remarkably: The fauna associated with reefs has gone from 33 a 141 species, Among them mere, Salmonettes Y Lubin, of great fishing interest. Besides, The natural reproduction of transplanted colonies has been documented for the first time, A milestone in the restoration of the orange coral in the Mediterranean.
A commitment that translates into actions
The involvement of the group is also reflected in its own measures such as the installation of artificial micro rerecifes inside the Marina del Este. These structures, that mimic the behavior of a natural reef, They are designed to integrate into the port infrastructure without affecting their activity. They serve as a refuge for different marine species, They attract microfauna and help capture carbon dioxide, thus contributing to regenerate the local ecosystem.
“From Marina del Este and the entire Marine Group of the Mediterranean we work so that our ports are a space where the nautical activity and conservation of the marine medium go hand in hand. That is why we support and give visibility to scientific and environmental projects that reinforce the sustainability of the environment ”, Manuel Raigón pointed out, Managing Marine Director of the Mediterranean.
The presentation held in Marina del Este brought together representatives of the Public Administration, universities, research centers and companies committed to marine conservation. The project is consolidated as well as a model that can be applied in other Mediterranean areas.
