Marina del Este collaborates with the University of Cádiz in a project to study marine biodiversity

The port participates in the BENTO project, which will allow us to analyze the evolution of marine species and early detect the presence of non-native organisms

The Marina del Este Marina collaborates with the University of Cádiz in the development of the BENTO project, a research focused on improving the monitoring of marine biodiversity in port environments and natural spaces of the Andalusian coast.

The project is developed by the University Institute of Marine Research of the University of Cádiz (INMAR-UCA) and includes work in different parts of the provinces of Cádiz, Málaga, Granada and Almeria. The location of Marina del Este allows the study to incorporate a port enclave close to a protected natural space of special value., such as the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Area.

As explained by Ignacio Gestoso, marine ecologist and researcher at INMAR-UCA, “We want to work in different environments along the eastern coast of Andalusia to the Strait of Gibraltar. The location of the Marina del Este port and its proximity to the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs make it a particularly interesting location to compare the biodiversity of the port with that of nearby natural areas”.

The structures are installed in different areas inside the marina

The investigation has already begun after a few weeks ago, small experimental panels were installed submerged in different areas inside the facility., reversibly attached to the pontoons and without affecting the facilities or the daily activity of the port. These structures allow us to study which organisms adhere to them, how its colonization evolves and if the presence of non-native species is detected.

The research team will take periodic photographs to follow the evolution of the panels and will collect minimum samples for subsequent analysis in the laboratory.. The work will take place until November 2026, time at which structures will be removed or replaced.

One of the main objectives of BENTO is to better understand the biodiversity that develops in port environments and compare it with that existing in nearby natural spaces.. The project will also make it possible to advance in the early detection of exotic marine species and learn about their possible expansion to other areas of the coast..

“Ports are sentinel places where biodiversity monitoring efforts can be concentrated and facilitate the early detection of exotic marine species.”. Working in different Andalusian ports will help us, besides, to lay the foundations for a regional monitoring network”, the researcher has pointed out.

For Manuel Raigón, managing director of Marina del Este, This collaboration gives continuity to a line of work very present in the management of the port. “Marina del Este maintains a constant commitment to sustainability, research and conservation of the marine environment. Opening our facilities to scientific projects such as BENTO allows us to contribute to the knowledge of the environment and move towards port management that is increasingly integrated into it.”, He has pointed out.

Sustainability and regeneration of the marine environment

The collaboration with the University of Cádiz joins other environmental initiatives developed in Marina del Este, such as the installation of six biomimetic microreefs together with the company Ocean Ecostructures. These structures, known as Life Boosting Units, They are designed to imitate the functioning of natural reefs and promote the regeneration of the ecosystem within the port., creating new shelter and feeding spaces for fish, algae and other marine organisms.

The first scientific monitoring, carried out six months after installation, identified 34 species in microreefs, in front of the 19 recorded on the port wall used as a control area. The results reflect an increase in 79 % in species richness and the generation of 14,2 kilos of biomass, in addition to a positive evolution of the marine communities settled on these structures.
